Morning mists after overnight rain lift from the hills each day. Today looks set for more rain with heavy skies and an eery calm. The forecast is for a tornado to rip though during the day carried by 100kph winds. I hope not because we’re off to the cinema and I don’t want to return to devastation. I’ve let the hens out early so they can get a head start on the day. It was still a bit dark at 7am so I think I may have disturbed their waking. Normally they are shouting at me to let them out, but not today. They tumbled out of their home bleary-eyed. For the moment it isn’t raining but it doesn’t look far off. (Correction - 8:00am torrential rain) FURTHER UPDATE - We’re now in the teeth of a monstrous gale. A tree has been blown down in the garden, the doors of the greenhouse have been blown out and there is glass everywhere , the hen run has moved a metre, the citruses have fallen in a gust and we have no electricity. But we’re fine. Gas hob means tea and cooking, mobile phone gives us internet and the house is in one piece. The rest we can deal with tomorrow!

Yesterday I had a clear-out in the potager shed ready for the arrival of a desk. It was very warm and I worked in shirtsleeves. However, this late warmth coupled with uncharacteristic wet weather has left us with a surfeit of mosquitoes, so I was bitten within moments. It made me work fast and I’ll be delighted when they have gone.

There is still plenty of colour around the garden despite rather dank days.
